Walt Whitman Bridge Approach Spans
During the fall of 2003 LNA Solutions provided an engineered solution for Design Plastic Systems of Norristown, NJ to secure fiberglass sections to the New Jersey approach of the Walt Whitman Bridge, linking New Jersey with Philadelphia, PA.
To assist stranded motorists, a fiberglass walkway was installed running along the side of the bridge. To connect the fiberglass to the supporting bridge structure, where no drilling was allowed, over 900 Girder Clamp connections were designed to securely hold the fiberglass in position.
Each connection was designed to take into account the complex existing structure that was completed in 1957. A series of shims were required to bridge over the upper face of the structure where steel sections were connected with rivets.
Once the fiberglass structure was in position over 2,400 grating fasteners were used to connect the fiberglass grating. This solution allowed Design Plastics to eliminate the need to pre-drill and site-drill the fiberglass structure to secure the grating.
